This afternoon (I just typed "this morning," because it feels like it was that long ago), I stopped by the church to talk to Mike about when we were going to get together with the rest of the Christmas production team to discuss Word on the Street, the Christmas show. Instead of giving me a time for the whole team, he said that he had wanted to talk to me about it first, because he wanted to know if I would be interested in directing the whole show, not just being "part of the team."
I had already kind of been planning for that, without even knowing if that was going to be the case--I've been doing some of the background work and research for directing, hoping that when we met as a team, I could bring those ideas to the table and maybe have some advantage in the whole directorship deal. Instead, God had it planned this way all along. Mike said that he's been praying a lot about where the show should go, and really felt like he should ask me to direct.
So that's exciting!!
And then, tonight, Fire Exit held its general auditions. I auditioned, but as an AD for Under a Bridge, Along a River, one of the shows this season, I also got to sit in on some of them as well.
The coolest part of the night, however, came after the auditions, when Wanda, Mark Lewandowski (one of the other directors), and I went to BP's to discuss the show that Wanda and I are working on. I haven't read the script yet--I just got it tonight--so I just sat there and listened. Absorbed as much as I could. Got ideas for my processes for Word. And really, just sat and learned as much as I could.
It was a good feeling--up there with the high that came when Janna and I went to Vancouver to see Espresso, and we got to go out for drinks with the cast and crew. It was that kind of experience--being in the presence of people who have so much more experience than I do, and who I can learn so much from, but who respect me and my processes, too. They know that they're light years ahead of me in the whole process, but they're still willing to help me get there the way I need to.
Very cool. I'm really looking forward to it; looking forward to working with Fire Exit in general, and with Wanda in specific this year. It's going to be a huge learning curve for me, I think. Exciting times!
